Update for May 8, 2020

Update for May 8, 2020

Mother's Day It has been a few days since my last update. Today’s update will focus on our end-of-the-year instructional requirements for KCSD students.  The end will sneak up on us quickly.  We only have 19 calendar days remaining (underclassmen) and one full instructional week.  The final week will allow students time to complete any outstanding work.  I will continue to preach “Grace over Grades;” however, students need to understand that some of the outstanding assignments in PowerSchool could turn into zeros when grades are finalized.  I am certain our educators will make well-thought-out decisions when that time arises.  Just a reminder to visit our past coronavirus update on May 5th for graduation information for all three high schools.  If you are going to attend one of the ceremonies, please go to the link below.  Each high school has a hyperlink to the stadium layout and facility parking format.  Our high school principals will send out more detailed information as we get closer to the events.  Again, we apologize that we have to limit the attendance, but for our graduating seniors to have a face-to-face ceremony, this was our best option.  https://www.kcsdschools.net/coronavirus

eLearning “instructional plan” for the remainder of the year:

Below is the academic plan for the remainder of the school year.  I know it is difficult to communicate with some of our families for a variety of reasons.  I also understand that being in a virtual environment for this duration has created engagement challenges; however, let’s all do our best to finish strong.

  • Waive Weeks:  May 11-15 and May 25-29
  • Report Cards:  May 29th (delivered via email and the PowerSchool Parent Portal)

End-of-Year Activities (Non-Instructional):

Beginning May 18th, our staffon a limited and rotational basiswill be able to return to our school facilities.  Prior to that time, we will have our entry procedures in place.  We know it will be a slight inconvenience as employees will use one door, have a temp check, and sanitize hands upon entering the building.  Employees will also be required to wear masks if they are outside of their classrooms, offices, or in small team meetings.  During this time, the individual buildings will be finishing up schedules for student book and computer turn-ins, locker cleanouts, and potential summer virtual learning activities.  More detailed and specific information will be coming in the next week or so from the building principals.

Food Service Notes:

Our food service department, coupled with our transportation department, continues to provide our students with meals weekly.  At last count, we had served over 257,000 meals across Kershaw County since the inception of our school closure.  There continues to be discussion at the state level on the level of support we will be able to provide during the summer months.

Happy early Mother’s Day to all of our Kershaw County mothers.  “The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation.” (In Loco Parentis) - James E. Faust  #myKCSD   #KCStrong
