McDonnell named North Central High interim head football coach

Rayn McDonnellNorth Central High Defensive Coordinator Ryan McDonnell has been named the interim head football coach for North Central High School following the resignation of Tyronne Drakeford. Drakeford has taken a position in another district.

McDonnell returned to North Central High in 2017 as the Knight’s strength coach and defensive coordinator. Prior to his return he served as the defensive line coach and assistant head coach in Colleton County for five years and at Lakewood High in Sumter for two years. He taught Physical Education and Strength and Conditioning at North Central High from 1998-2010, and served as an assistant football coach, head wrestling coach (2003-2010) and track coach (2002-2003).

In 2011 he was awarded the South Carolina Strength Coach of the Year award.

McDonnell graduated from The Citadel with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

“I am very excited about this opportunity to lead these young men. We look forward to representing North Central in the community and on the field this fall,” says McDonnell.

Following the fall football season, a formal search process will begin for a North Central High Student Activities Director/Head Football Coach for the 2023-2024 year.
