April 21, 2021
At its meeting last night, the Kershaw County School Board voted to approve Pine Tree Hill Elementary School Principal Melissa Royalty as the new director for the Kershaw County Virtual Academy for the 2021-22 school year. Bethune Elementary School Principal Markeita Barber was approved to replace Royalty.
"It will be greatly beneficial to have a veteran principal with Mrs. Royalty's talents lead our remote learning efforts as we transition to a virtual academy next school year," said Kershaw County School District Superintendent Shane Robbins. "We are also fortunate to have Mrs. Barber's leadership to continue the academic progress at Pine Tree Hill."
"I am honored to be leading the KCSD Virtual Academy for the 2021-2022 school year," Royalty said. "The concept of traditional education has changed radically within the last year. Virtual learning is innovative, and I'm excited to be a part of this pioneering endeavor."
She added that Pine Tree Hill has been her "home for the last eight years. The community has been welcoming and gracious, and I will miss them terribly."
Barber echoed Royalty's excitement for her new role. "As my journey takes me to new places, I am honored and blessed to join and serve the faculty, staff and families of Pine Tree Hill Elementary School," she said. "I look forward to continuing and contributing to the academic success of this great school while building positive relationships and nurturing a positive learning environment."
Barber added, "I would be remiss not to express my love and appreciation to my Bethune Elementary family. They‘ll always have a special place in my heart. I am blessed to be a 'forever Wild Kitten' and excited to become a 'Bull Pup.'"
