At its organizational meeting Tuesday, January 10, the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees installed new and returning members, elected new officers, honored a member for years of service and signed the SC School Boards Association's (SCSBA) ethical principles.

Dr. Harrison Goodwin administered the Oath of Office to returning school board member Shirley Halley and newly-elected school board members Donald Reeves and David Roberts. Paul Napper swore in newly-elected trustee Dr. Charles King.

Dr. James Smith was re-elected as Kershaw County School Board (KCSB) chairperson and Shirley Halley was re-elected to serve as vice-chairperson and chaplain.

Chairman Smith appointed Matt Irick as the chair of the board’s finance and facilities committee and Dr. Charles King as the board’s legislative liaison.

The South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) recognized Ron Blackmon for 10 years of school board service. Blackmon was one of only 25 school board members from across the state to receive a 10 or 15-year benchmark recognition. He received a special lapel pin and a certificate from SCSBA.

Kershaw County School Board members also signed SCSBA's annual ethical principles that reinforce board members' commitment to open communication, support for public education and working together.

January is School Board Member Appreciation Month. This year’s theme, “Forward Together” reminds us all to celebrate the unique role school boards play in championing and advocating for quality education and the ownership they take for governing their local public schools.
