Students participating in this major will be prepared to further their education in various opportunities in the healthcare field such as a dental hygienist, dentist, medical assistant, microbiologist, nurse, nursing assistant, occupational therapist, paramedic, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician, radiologist, speech therapist, veterinarian and veterinary technician.

Prerequisite: None. Must register for both Health Science 1 and Health Science 2.

Health Science 1 is the first of four courses offered to students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field.  During this first course students are introduced to healthcare history, careers, law and ethics, cultural diversity, healthcare language and math, infection control, professionalism, communication, basics of the organization of healthcare facilities, and types of healthcare insurance. Students obtain OSHA-10 certification.

Grades 10 – 12                                                  

1 unit

Prerequisite: None. Must register for both Health Science 1 and Health Science 2.

Health Science 2 applies the knowledge and skills that were learned in Health Science 1 while further challenging the students to learn more about the healthcare field.  Health Science 2 will continue teaching in more detail, the units of study that include advanced study of infection control.  This course provides a foundation for further advancement in Health Science. Students obtain First Aid / CPR certification.

Emergency Medical Service 1 (EMS 1)   553100CW

Prerequisites: None  (Students must register for EMS 1 and EMS 2)

EMS 1 is designed to teach students how to recognize and respond to various emergencies. Students will review basic anatomy and physiology as it related to injury management and treatment. Students will review basic information needed for for all phases of a healthcare professional. Information that students are exposed to will include legal and ethical implications, communications, safety, infection control, and professionalism. In this course, students will learn what skills are necessary to recognize and care for emergencies in adults, children, and infants until professional medical help arrives. Students will obtain FA/CPR/AED certification. Students must be able to perform light physical activity.

Emergency Medical Services 2 (EMS 2)  553200CW

Prerequisites: None  (Students must register for EMS 1 and EMS 2)

EMS 2 is a continuation of EMS 1. The course includes content and skills that first responders need to provide appropriate initial care regardless of the emergency. EMS 2 stresses the steps to follow in an emergency until more advanced medical personnel arrive. The skills and content taught at this level become more specific and rigorous, Students have the opportunity to earn the Basic Life Support (BLS) industry certification,.

Successful completion of this course may result in First Responder certification available through various national certifying bodies.

Health Science 3: Human Structure, Functions & Disease    555282CD

Prerequisite: Health Science 1 and 2 or EMS 1 and 2 

Health Science 3 acquaints students with basic anatomy and physiology of the human body.  Students learn how the human body is structured and the function of each of the 11 body systems.  Students will study the relationship that body systems have with disease from the healthcare point of view.  This course does not count as a lab science.  Students are recommended to be First Aid and CPR certified prior to this course.  Students should be familiar with general medical terminology as well as technical skills associated with vital signs. Students have the opportunity to earn the Basic Life Support (BLS) industry certification.

Honors Health Science Clinical Study - C.N.A.     556082HD

Prerequisite: Health Science 1 and 2, Health Science 3 (Health Science 3 may be substituted with Honors Human Body Systems, Anatomy & Physiology,  AP Biology or EMS 1/2) OR Honors Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Honors Human Body Systems 

Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, students are prepared to perform nursing-related services to patients and residents in assisted living and long-term care facilities. CNA students will review all foundation standards in the clinical study program, as well as the addition of the South Carolina Nurse Aide Curriculum, found in the training program packet.

This is a state level certification course. This course meets all DHHS federal and state requirements for a certified nurse aide program in an approved NA training facility. Students must provide transportation to health care facilities. Students are responsible for the fees.

Medical Terminology     554000CW

Prerequisite: None. Must register for both Medical Terminology and Sports Nutrition 1.

Medical terminology is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of health professions. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach, students will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Students will use problem-solving techniques to assist in developing an understanding of course concepts.

Sports Nutrition 1   576082CW

Prerequisite: None. Must register for both Medical Terminology and Sports Nutrition 1.

Sports Nutrition 1 is designed for all students. This course examines the relationship between nutrition, physical performance, and overall wellness. Students will learn how to choose nutritious foods for healthy lifestyles and peak performance. Health and disease prevention through nutrition, physical activity, and wellness practices are essential components of the course. 

Honors Health Science Clinical Study - Pre-Professional Studies    556085HD

Prerequisite: Honors Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Honors Human Body Systems OR Health Science 1 and 2, Health Science 3 (Health Science 3 may be substituted with Honors Human Body Systems, Anatomy  & Physiology, or AP Biology, EMS 1&2)

Honors Health Science Clinical Study-Pre-Medicine is designed to give students an opportunity to gain clinical experience. Possible areas of clinical internship include, but are not limited to Pharmacy, Dentistry, Optometry, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Medicine. A combination of classroom instruction and work-based experiences are used to prepare students for post-secondary education pr employment in the healthcare field. Students complete a personal career portfolio and resume. Students enrolled in this course will complete an internship. Dependable means of transportation to and from the internship sites are required. Students are responsible for the fee, clinical supplies, and uniforms, if applicable.
