Biomedical Sciences PLTW
Biomedical Sciences (PLTW) Course Listing
Honors Biomedical Sciences is a sequence of two courses that provide a hands-on, real-world problem-solving approach to learning. Students participating in this major will be prepared to further their education in various opportunities in the healthcare field such as a dentist, microbiologist, nurse, occupational therapist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician, speech therapist.
PLTW - Honors Principles of Biomedical Sciences 558082HD
Grades 10 – 11
2 units
Prerequisite: Completed or enrolled in Honors Biology 1
This course introduces the biomedical sciences through exciting “hands-on” projects and problems. Student work involves the study of human medicine, research processes and an introduction to bioinformatics. Students investigate the human body systems and various health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. A theme through the course is to determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. After determining the factors responsible for the death, the students investigate lifestyle choices and medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. Key biological concepts including: homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, feedback systems, and defense against disease are embedded in the curriculum. The course is designed to provide an overview of all the courses in the Biomedical Sciences program and to lay the scientific foundation necessary for student success in the subsequent courses. Successful completion of the National PLTW Assessment will allow the credit to be AP-weighted on the Uniform Grading Scale. *Students can earn AP weight with proficiency score on national exam*
PLTW - Honors Human Body Systems 558182HD
Grades 11 – 12
2 units
Prerequisite: Honors BIOMED 1 or Health Science 1 and 2
This course uses real-world cases where students take the role of biomedical professionals and work together to solve medical mysteries. Hands-on projects include designing experiments, investigating the structures and functions of body systems, and using data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary actions, and respiratory operation. Students examine the processes, structures, and interactions of the human body systems to learn how they work together to maintain homeostasis (internal balance) and good health. Successful completion of the National PLTW Assessment will allow the credit to be AP-weighted on the Uniform Grading Scale. *Students can earn AP weight with proficiency score on national exam*
Honors Health Science Clinical Study - Pre-Professional Studies 556082HD
Grade 12
2 units
Prerequisite: Honors Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Honors Human Body Systems OR Health Science 1 and 2, Health Science 3 (Health Science 3 may be substituted with Honors Human Body Systems, Anatomy & Physiology, AP Biology, or EMS 1 & 2)
Honors Health Science Clinical Study - Pre-Medicine is designed to give students an opportunity to gain clinical experience. Possible areas of clinical internships include, but are not limited to, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Optometry, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Medicine. A combination of classroom instruction and work-based experiences are used to prepare students for post-secondary education or employment in the healthcare field. Students enrolled will complete an internship. Dependable means of transportation to and from the assigned internship sites are required. . Students are responsible for the fees for the CPR certification, clinical supplies and scrub/uniform, if applicable.
Honors Health Science Clinical Study - C.N.A. 556082HD
Grade 12
2 units
Prerequisite: Health Science 1 and 2, Health Science 3 (Health Science 3 may be substituted with Honors Human Body Systems, Anatomy and Physiology or AP Biology), or Honors Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Honors Human Body Systems.
Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, students are prepared to perform nursing-related services to patients and residents in hospitals or long-tern care facilities. For Nurse-Aide program, students will review all foundational standards in the clinical study program, as well as the addition of the South Carolina Nurse Aide Curriculum, found in the training program packet.
This is a state level certification course. This course meets all DHHS federal and state requirements for a certified nurse aide program in an approved NA training facility. Students enrolled will complete an internship. Dependable means of transportation to and from the assigned internship sites are required. . Students may be responsible for fees.
