Woolard Technology Center

The Woolard Technology Center (WTC) is the center for career and technology education in Kershaw County.  It provides students from the three district high schools with technical and academic skills for twenty different career majors.  Instruction at WTC consists of two blocks per day in the high school schedule. Programs are designed for three years in length beginning in the 10th grade; however, 11th and 12th grade students may also begin a program.

At WTC, students can explore career options, train for a specific career, and/or be ready for post-secondary education at a two-year or four-year college or university.  Laboratories equipped with computers, industrial machinery, and other state-of-the-art equipment provide hands-on training for students in addition to the academic component of each course of study.  Some WTC classes may require a fee for supplies and/or safety equipment.

Junior and senior students who demonstrate a high level of competency and career readiness in their program can participate in  supervised internships. In addition, articulation agreements with Central Carolina Technical College. There are dual-credit opportunities with Central Carolina Technical College. Qualified students in Early Childhood Education, Mechatronics and Welding may participate in the CCTC fast track certificate programs their senior year. 

Currently, the five WTC programs that have articulation agreements and/or dual-credit opportunities for students to earn advanced credit at the post-secondary level to pursue a certificate, associate, or baccalaureate degree are:

  • Early Childhood Education
  • Honors Engineering
  • Law Enforcement
  • Mechatronics
  • Welding 

ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Students register for classes at WTC through their home high school school counselor. The administration at WTC reviews all students registered for WTC classes according to the following criteria:

  • Academic Scholarship – Rigor of courses taken and grades are reviewed.
  • School Citizenship – Student behavior and attitudes are reviewed.
  • Attendance – Students should have strong patterns of school attendance. Absences and tardies are reviewed.
  • Priority goes to 10th grade students for Level 1 classes.
  • WTC Teacher Recommendation - For admission into Level 2, WTC teachers suggest that students complete Level 1 with a grade of 80 or higher and be recommended. Level 2 is a commitment to complete a career major; students should have a good Level 1 foundation to be successful in Level 2. WTC and the home High School discipline records are considered as part of the level 2 admission decisions.
  • Admissions to Level 3 and 4 classes and work-based learning experiences are based on WTC teachers’ recommendation,WTC and home High School discipline records, and attendance and individual program requirements.
