Attendance
Attendance is a requirement for promotion and/or credit. According to South Carolina law, excessive student absences may lead to denial of credit. Students should present an excuse to proper school officials within five school days following the return from an absence or absences. These notes are crucial in determining whether credit can be awarded. Physicians’ notes and excuses for legal appointments and death in the family are important factors in determining if credit can be awarded.
Students taking courses for high school credit can accrue the following number of absences before losing course credit. According to the SC Department of Education in a 90 minute semester block class, any absence after the 5th absence (3 absences in a Quarter class, 10 absences in a year long class) is considered unlawful unless it is medically excused, death of a family member, recognized religious observance, or excused by administration. Any other reason for the absence after that specified number of absences is considered unlawful. Students with excessive unlawful absences may lose credit
Students must attend each class for a minimum of 75 minutes (High Schools) and 150 minutes (WTC) to be counted present.
