Mrs. Melissa Royalty

Hi Bullpup Families!  I am Melissa Morgan Royalty, and I grew up in a little coal mining town in southern WV. My mother is a retired educator and my father is a retired coal miner. My parents taught me that anything worth doing is worth doing well! They instilled a love of learning in me at an early age! After high school, I attended Concord College in Athens, WV and received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1989. Upon college graduation, I accepted a job in Leesville, Louisiana as a 4th grade teacher and that set into motion the path for the rest of my life. While living in LA I met my husband. My husband was an Army officer and that afforded my family the opportunity to move throughout the United States and overseas. We lived in Louisiana, Georgia, Alaska, Hawaii, Kansas, California, South Korea, London and South Carolina. Over the years I earned a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling and another Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership as well as an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. Since 1989, I worked for the local schools at the various duty stations where my husband was assigned.

My husband and I have four beautiful children. Chris is a Major in the Army and is stationed in Germany; Ben is a Police Officer;, Kasey is a Technology Coach at Lonnie B Nelson in Richland Two;, and Mackenzie is a STEM art teacher at Rocky Creek Elementary in Lexington District One. Ken and I are grandparents too! We have six grandchildren. My husband retired from the Army in 2012, and we decided to make Camden, South Carolina our forever home.  We have three dogs that keep us busy. "Winnie the Bullpup" can be found on the PTH campus most school days! She has become the unofficial mascot of PTH!

I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, reading, antiquing and renovating homes. My husband and I have visited 50 countries, and with God's grace, plan to continue to travel for many years to come! Throughout my experiences, I have felt blessed to have my roots firmly planted in the sweet little town of Oceana, West Virginia where I grew up. My family taught me to love unconditionally, speak up for what I believe in, to do my best, and to always do the right thing! I am thankful for my life’s experiences and absolutely love being a Bullpup!

I  welcome all the Bullpup Families to get involved with the school as much as they can! If you ever need my assistance, you can reach me at 803-424-2276, or on my cell phone at 803-312-2156. You can also reach me through email at melissa.royalty@kcsdschools.net.

I'm excited to be serving as the Assistant Principal of Pine Tree Hill Elementary once again. I love being a Bullpup! This will be my 20th year in education. 20th year in 2020! What a funny coincidence! From 2012-2018, I served at LEMS as an ELA teacher (2012-2014), interventionist (2014-2017), and Assistant Administrator (2017-2018).   I grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, which is a city right outside of Boston. I earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in English in 1996 at Notre Dame College. In 2000, I received a Master’s in Elementary Education and began teaching in Dover, Delaware.  I moved to South Carolina in 2005. Since then I've taught in two other districts in South Carolina. I also taught for a year in Louisiana before joining Kershaw County School District. In 2011, I earned an Ed. S. in Educational Leadership with principal certification. In 2020, during the craziness of the pandemic, I earned my Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.

During my senior year of college, I married my husband, Glaysen in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii.  My husband served in the U.S. Air Force until retiring in 2010. He is a now teacher in Sumter School District.  My husband and I have two children. My daughter, Cassidy, is a graduate from the University of South Carolina Beaufort, and my son, Glaysen, is a freshman at Clemson University studying to be an electrical engineer.  In my free time, I love to travel, especially to Disney World, and I love spending time with my family. I am excited about this year, and I look forward to working with you all.  If you need anything, please feel free to contact me. I can be reached through Class Dojo, email, or by phone. My email is tammy.small@kcsdschools.net.
