Jackson Elementary Library
A full-time National Board Certified Library media specialist and 1 part-time media assistant staff the library at Jackson School. The Library Media Program serves all students in kindergarten through 5th grades. They are taught information literacy skills and project based learning through collaborative planning, teaching and assessing between classroom teachers and the media specialist using a flexible schedule. The school community has access to the library on a daily basis during school hours and 30 minutes before and after school.
The library media staff is committed to supporting the curriculum needs by carefully selecting and purchasing materials in many formats, and maintaining a partnership with teachers while assisting them with instructional resources and materials. The library is automated with card catalog and circulation technology. The Internet is available for use by the school community. The library also takes a leadership role in promoting literacy for students. The avenues taken in this role are through encouraging students to consistently read for pleasure and for knowledge. They are also encouraged to participate in literacy activities. Students’ reading abilities are monitored and assessed using the school-wide assessment, MAP. This test uses Rausch Units to measure grow for individual students. The Lexile Reading Levels are extracted from the MAP to establish students’ reading levels. Students are also encouraged to actively participate in the selection process for the South Carolina Picture Book Award (K-3rd Grades) and South Carolina Children’s Book Award (3rd-5th grades). Book clubs and literature circles are also sponsored through the library.
