Helen Walker began teaching in England in 1994. Ms. Walker is the Music teacher at Doby’s Mill Elementary school, Elgin, SC, and has taught in Kershaw county schools since 2000 on arrival to the USA from England as an international teacher.
Ms. Walker received her BEd Hons from Wolverhamton University, UK in Elementary Ed with a music major and performing arts minor. Receiving her Music teaching diploma from Thames Valley University, London, UK, Ms. Walker has studied and taught in association with the Royal Schools of Music since 1992.
Personal performance and attainments include achieving grade 8 in music theory the highest theory grade to be taken, grade 7 in flute performance and grade 6 in piano. Receiving Masters in divergent learning from Francis Marion University, Florence, SC and 2004 and subsequently gaining masters +30 level in 2012. Ms. Walker remains in association with ABRSM and British music education to combine anglo-american arts education as of 2007. Ms. Walker received National Board Certification in music education 2008 and renewed 2018. Ms. Walker has received many grants with which she enhances her music program. Ms. Walker directs the DME Choraliers a preforming and competitive chorus of third, fourth and fifth grade students. In 2015 one of the DME Choraliers sang in the South Carolina Music Educators Elementary All-State Honor Choir. The summer of 2016 saw Ms. Walker participate in the STEM to STEAM institute at the Columbia Museum of Art. During the summer of 2017 Ms. Walker taught at the Kershaw County Artistically Gifted and talent camp Arts Arising as she has done the past 7 years and also began a needs and nature of the artistically gifted and talented students summer course to earn her artistically gifted and talented teacher endorsement on her teaching licence.
Ms. Walker was named Doby’s Mill Teacher Of the Year in 2010, Kershaw County District Teacher Of the Year in 2011 and top five State SC Honor Roll Teacher Of the Year in 2012. Ms. Walker is an alumni of the 2013 class of the SC Education Policy Fellows.Ms. Walker has been fortunate enough to receive the Francis Marion Alumni Award, Marjorie Stands, Music Educator of The year Award and a Grammy Music Educator of the Year Semi Finalist award. Ms. Walker is Orff and GIML certified in music methodologies. Ms. Walker participated in the artistically gifted and talented summer institute professional development 2017/2018 and completed the R2S requirements. Ms. Walker completed technology in the arts summer institute and nature and needs of gifted and talented students this summer 2021. Ms. Walker is currently studying sound healing and music therapy wihch she intends to incorporate into her classroom this school year.
Ms. Walker believes all children are born with an innate musical ability and it is vital to develop and love and appreciation for music in the formative and elementary years. In her personal time Ms. Walker loves to have outdoor adventures with her dog Brayden, cook, garden, read and travel.
