Mr. Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson, High School Choral Director, is now in his sixth year at Lugoff-Elgin high school after teaching for several years in the Charleston area. Since Mr. Johnson arrived, the choir has grown from nine students to almost one hundred. He has directed the advanced singers in three successful Madrigal Dinners, a Yuletide feast, play, comedy, and concert all in one, and he has helped as the musical director in L.E.'s musical's. He has directed the choirs of James Island Middle School and Ashley Ridge High School. He has also taught guitar at Alston Middle School. Before coming to LEHS, he spent the last four years as the Chorus and Band director at Bishop England High School where the Chorus was asked to perform at the National Catholic Education convention in Charleston.

He received his Master of Arts in Teaching in performing arts, with an emphasis in choral conducting from the University of Charleston, and completed his undergraduate studies at the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory and Composition. While at the College of Charleston he was elected President of the Concert Choir. He was also asked to write a fight song for the basketball team, and was featured on Cougar television.

The 2015-2016 was an exciting, ambitious and successful year. Our Choir won a local television contest beating out several (great) Columbia choirs to be able to sing on stage with the rock group Foreigner. In December of 2015 the Madrigal Singers put on a very successful 1st Madrigal Dinner followed by a second in 2016 (their will be a third one this year).  The choir also performed at Carowinds in the May 2017 and received a rating of excellent.

2014 was the inaugural year of Tri-M, a nationally recognized music honor society, started by Mr. Johson and several chorus students. In his time at Lugoff-Elgin, the chorus performs at the school several times per year and has had many performances off campus including:

  • Singing the National Anthem at Football Games
  • USC honors chorus in Columbia
  • Camp Butterfly at Kershaw Hospice
  • Morningside retirement home
  • Kershaw County Choral Music Showcase
  • Elgin Tree Lighting
  • Students selected to sing at the American Choral Director’s Association conference
  • Candlelight Tour of Homes
  • Kershaw County Festival of Fine Arts
