The Kershaw County School District has, for over 30 years, demonstrated a commitment to arts education. In the early 1980’s, partnerships with community arts advocacy groups began an extensive program of artist residencies in Kershaw County Schools. Beginning in 1985, the Kershaw County School District became one of the original Arts in Basic Curriculum sites sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission, the University of South Carolina and Winthrop University. District resources, numerous grants, and local support have contributed to the arts opportunities provided in the Kershaw County Schools including an annual arts gala, elementary strings program, and a week long summer program for gifted arts students.
The Kershaw County School District provides arts education for 11,000 students annually. Elementary students are instructed in visual art, music and creative writing, while, middle school students may additionally experience instruction in dance or theater. High school students may choose from instrumental music, chorus, visual art, theater or dance.
