Frequently Asked Questions about eLearning
What is eLearning?
eLearning is the use of technology to enable students to learn anytime and anywhere. We will use virtual eLearning Days for most days when school is closed due to bad weather.
What is an eLearning Inclement Weather Day?
On eLearning days used for inclement weather, students will not report to school, but will engage in eLearning activities using technology. The number of virtual eLearning days used and whether or not we would have two virtual eLearning days in a row will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
How and when will students and parents know if an eLearning Day will take place?
Inclement weather cancellations and the announcement of an eLearning Day will be relayed through the school’s mass notification system, district/school websites, mobile app, social media (Facebook and Twitter), and local media.
How will students be informed about assignments during an eLearning Day?
All parents and students should become familiar and bookmark their teachers’ Canvas pages prior to an eLearning Day. All teachers will post contact information and assignments to Canvas by 9:00 a.m. on an eLearning Day and will be available online during their office hours.
How will students obtain assistance from teachers on an eLearning Day?
Teachers will be available through email and will post other means of communication on Canvas.
How much school work will students be required to accomplish?
Students will be assigned virtual classroom work from each class or subject they have in a normal school day. Each lesson will be relevant to current instruction and should not take students much time to complete when on task. We do not want to overload our students with busy work. By using current instruction, we can give them work to prepare for state assessments and meet educational standards that they missed on the inclement weather day.
How much time is the student expected to work online during an eLearning Day?
No minimum or maximum amount of time is expected. Students should complete their work carefully, using the amount of time that is appropriate for them.
When will assignments be due?
Teachers will inform students about the timeline to turn in assigned work.
Do students with identified special learning needs have an alternative means to access their education on eLearning days?
Yes, individual supports, services, and accommodations for students with an Individual Education Program (IEP) or a Section 504 Plan will be reviewed, discussed, and agreed upon at the student’s IEP or Section 504 meeting. All accommodations will be met during the eLearning day or the two school days after returning.
What if a student does not have access to the internet?
We are aware that not all students have internet access at home. Students without internet connections are encouraged to use public libraries or other sites with free Wi-Fi if it is safe to do so. KCSD has equipped our activity buses with WiFi. These buses are strategically located where students/parents can take their students (conditions permitting) to work on their assignments.
Although we encourage getting assignments done on eLearning days, assignment due dates will be communicated to the student by their teacher. In addition, if an eLearning Day is scheduled with enough notice, students may be able to download their assignments before they leave school on the previous day so they can work on their devices offline at home during the eLearning Day.
How will eLearning be monitored and counted for attendance?
Teachers will assess the student’s work and determine if the student has met the instructional goals for the day. The actual amount of time online is less important than the work produced and/or created by the student to demonstrate learning and mastery of learning targets.
As a district, we are still held accountable for attendance on an eLearning day. Students may check-in for attendance using one of the following options:
- Completing a digital assignment given by the teacher,
- Contacting your student’s teacher during his/her office hours to determine what the student must complete/submit to meet the attendance requirement or
- Returning completed assignments to the teacher within the allotted time frame given by the teacher.
What if the student’s device is not working on an eLearning day?
The student should contact Tech Support email@example.com to see if they can help with the problem. If the student cannot find a way to complete the assignments, he/she should let the teacher know. The student will need to take the device to the technology department to be repaired when he/she returns to school. On an extended eLearning session, the student should contact the Technology Help Desk firstname.lastname@example.org to request a loaner device before their device is fixed.
What if a student cannot access YouTube videos or specific websites assigned by the teacher?
A student needs to be logged into Google with his/her KCSD assigned account to have the correct permissions. Here is how to be sure the student is properly signed in:
- Login with the student’s Google account. (A student’s username is his/her email address: email@example.com. Then enter the student’s password.)
- Once a student is logged into Google, the student should now try to access the website or videos.
They can also try these troubleshooting tips, which often fix the problem.
If the student is still experiencing problems, they should contact their teacher first and then the tech support (firstname.lastname@example.org) if the problem persists.
What if a student's device cannot access the wireless connection at home or another remote location?
Try rebooting the wifi device to reset the wireless connection. Also, verify the correct login and password for the wireless router are entered.
