The Kershaw County School District will begin implementing clear bag procedures Dec. 1 for middle and high school extracurricular activities as an added safety measure.

“Most of our neighboring school districts already do this,” said KCSD Superintendent Shane Robbins. “Our principals and activities directors have worked together to develop our guidelines, and we are putting this in place at the beginning of the winter sports season so we will have plenty of time to let our sports fans and visitors know about this.”

Under the new guidelines, persons can use clear tote bags no bigger than 12x6x12 inches or a clear plastic bag no larger than a gallon size to carry items into extracurricular activities. Keys, wallets, phones, credit cards and cash may be carried in a pocket or in hand. Medically necessary items will be able to be brought in after proper inspection at the gates.

Visitors can also bring seat cushions that do not have pockets, zippered pockets, compartments or covers. Umbrellas and clear rain ponchos are also acceptable as well as small clutches that are no larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches.

“We’ve worked to better increase our safety measures in our schools and that includes our extracurricular activities too,” Robbins said. “With increased safety often comes a level of inconvenience, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation with these new guidelines.”
