    Happy March!

Hard to believe we have been in our new building for two months already!  Everyone has adjusted well to the new building and the students, especially, are pros at finding their way around!  We thank you for your support in following our new policies and procedures in the car-line and also entering the building.  We are very pleased at how smoothly our new security system is working and all our visitors have been very cooperative.  If you have any suggestions on how we can improve upon any of our procedures, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

We have a lot of fun events coming in March so be sure to check out the newsletter and the March calendar.  Our annual golf tournament is on the 14th and we need your support as this is our largest fundraiser of the year.  Also this month is our very first Boosterthon Fun Run!  This is not only a fun event for the students but it also promotes physical activity and will hopefully be a successful fundraiser!  Please watch for additional information that will be coming home soon!  Tuesday, March 26th, is our Dynomite Family Night!  Along with the Book Fair, there will be dinner, displays and student performances.  Please put that on your calendar as it promises to be a great evening!

Thank you for supporting our teachers and your students as they are Galloping to Greatness!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  Hope everyone had a wonderful break and are ready to finish the school year in our new building!  Things have been going well here on Laurens Street! The students have adjusted well and are starting to find their way around the school like pros!  There will be new procedures for the children and for the parents and we greatly appreciate your cooperation.

This is going to be a very busy month and we wanted to get this abbreviated version of our newsletter out to you as soon as possible.  Please check out all events this month and make sure you put them on your calendar.

We are so excited for you to see the inside of our new school and you’ll have several opportunities this month.  You’ve supported this project from the start and we can’t wait to show the school off.

  • Hello, October!

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 10/2/2018 2:00:00 PM

The calendar says that it is October but I am not sure the weather has heard!  I think we are all ready for the cool temperatures!  We were very fortunate to only miss a day of school for the hurricane last month.  Be sure to put our make-up weather day,  Monday, January 7th on your calendar.

Hopefully, you have already met with your child’s teacher for a beginning of the year conference.  Teachers should have them scheduled by the end of September but some may extend into October as teachers wait for fall MAP scores.  If you have not scheduled a conference yet, please contact your child’s teacher for a meeting date.

We are being told that the opening of the new school is still on schedule for a January opening.  We took a group of teachers on a tour last month and we can’t wait for the opening!  We know we still have a lot of details to work out and we will have teams of teachers working to make sure we have a smooth opening.  I welcome any new school questions or concerns from parents that we need to address.

Please remember you still have an opportunity to join our parent organization, Camden Elementary Partners for $5.00.  This amazing organization supports our school through fundraisers, teacher appreciation, and volunteer opportunities.  Forms to sign-up are in the front office.  Please don’t hesitate to give me a call if you want to know how you can volunteer.  We can definitely use you!  Let’s work together and we’ll be Galloping to Greatness!

  • Welcome Back

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 9/4/2018 8:00:00 AM

WELCOME BACK to another fantastic school year!  We have a number of events planned to say good-bye to Camden Elementary on Lyttleton Street and hello to Camden Elementary on Laurens Street.  One of the tasks we have undertaken is sorting through hundreds of photos to identify individuals in them and also to put them in chronological order.  If you would like to help, please contact Ms. Tracey Hanna, our school librarian.

The opening of the new building is still on schedule.  We plan on having everything moved to the new campus in December and have the children start back in January.  There will be a number of changes, especially in the dropping off and picking up of children.  We will share information as soon as we finalize our plans.

We have a great staff this year and they are energized and looking forward to a fantastic year!  Please be sure to look for their newsletter each week as it contains important information.  Communication between school and parent is very important so please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher by phone or email.  We do ask that you allow them 24 hours to respond to you.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me too, if you have any questions or concerns. Together we will be Galloping to Greatness!

  • April's Here!

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 4/9/2018 3:05:00 PM

I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break and are ready to finish the school year out strong!  The teachers still have a lot of new material to cover and they also need to begin reviewing everything they taught early in the year.  So, with all this left to do, we need your help in making sure your child comes to school every day, on time and please avoid early dismissals. Teaching is still taking place until the end of the school day.

Our third, fourth and fifth graders did a great job on the MAP tests last month.  We saw growth in both subjects, and across the grade levels!  This has also provided teachers with important information as to what they will need to review prior to SC Ready and PASS.  Those children who met their MAP goals, set by their teachers, were able to celebrate with an extra recess and the opportunity to purchase a small Kona Ice.

We are very excited that on Wednesday, April 25th, Camden High School seniors will be coming to Camden Elementary for their Senior Walk!  All the children will be in the hallway to watch the parade of former Camden Elementary students and see what they can also achieve with hard work.  This will also be a very proud moment for those teachers who taught these young ladies and gentlemen.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child or Camden Elementary.  Remember that, Together We Make the Difference!

  • March Madness

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 3/2/2018 3:00:00 PM

I asked my teachers if they were familiar with March Madness, which refers to a month of college basketball leading to the national championship.  With that reference I told them that is what our school March calendar looked like – pure madness!  We have activities, field trips, and events, non-stop!  The light at the end of the tunnel is March 31st, when spring break starts!  When they return, teachers can then focus on instruction and reviewing for the end of the year assessments, primarily for grades 3-5.

Teachers have scheduled their MAP assessments dates and I’m sure you’ll receive that information in your newsletters.  This spring assessment is especially important because it gives teachers the necessary information about what skills needs to be reviewed or retaught.  Please encourage your child to take their time and do their best.  Teachers will be setting goals for their students and they will be conferencing with each of them, talking about individual goals and good test taking strategies.  To celebrate children who make their MAP goals, we have scheduled an extra recess in April and May, and they will have an opportunity to purchase Kona Ice, is they want.

In light of the recent events in Florida and other locations, I want parents to know that we will continue to be vigilant in making sure our school is safe.  I have spoken to the Camden Police department and they will be assisting with a drill later this month – more info to follow.  I have also been asking LOTS of questions about the security features at the new school, to make sure they are in place before we open.  Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions, because Together We Make the Difference!

  • February Post

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 2/1/2018 7:30:00 AM

I am sure everyone is happy to say goodbye to January, and hopefully February will bring us much better weather.  We do appreciate everyone being flexible with our unusual schedules, and our teachers did an exceptional job of keeping the learning happening.

We have a lot of activities going on this month, so please check out the articles in the newsletter for all the details.  I really want to stress the importance of the Kindergarten Round-Up on February 15th.  We need all parents of a rising kindergartener to bring your child and come in on that Thursday to register.  The kindergarten teachers will be on hand to give each child a little readiness assessment.  This information helps us as we place the children in classes next year.  Also, please share this information with family and friends and others at your daycare, preschool or churches.  Kindergarten staffing depends on these numbers.

I have always stressed the importance of good home / school communication.  I have instructed my teachers that they have 24 hours to respond to a phone call, email or note, unless of course, it is an urgent concern that needs to be dealt with immediately.  Please understand that teachers cannot check email, text messages or Dojo messages while they are teaching.  I am sure that you would not want them doing that while they should be teaching. Sometimes a teacher may be able to call you back in the evening, but we hope you understand that they do have families and other commitments in the evenings and are not required to respond at night.  Please, do not hesitate to let me know if you have not heard back from a teacher with 24 hours of making contact with a concern.

    Thank you, and as always,

    Together We Make The Difference!

  • Happy New Year!

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 1/8/2018 8:00:00 AM

This new year really got off to a crazy start!  We greatly appreciated your patience as we adjusted the schedule taking into consideration the safety of all the students across the district.  We are fortunate that the preschools and daycares in the community also worked with our schedule.  Hopefully, this will be the last of the bad weather that we will see for a while!

Please check out the school calendar for the holidays and the days of attendance in January.  Friday, January 12th was to be a teacher workday, with no student attendance, but now has to be used as a weather day for a day missed in the fall.  Students will attend school on that Friday.  They will not however, have school on Monday and Tuesday, January 15th and 16th.  Our restaurant nights are starting back up, please check out our calendar and support those businesses that so graciously support our school!

We so appreciate the support that our parents consistently demonstrate.  Our school could not operate, nor be as successful as it is, without our fantastic parents!  Throughout a school year, many decisions have to be made, and now with a new school on the horizon, we have even more decisions to be made.  Please know that most decisions at Camden Elementary are not just made at the administrative level.  We have a school leadership team that meets monthly and we have a wonderful School Improvement Council (SIC), made up of parents, teachers and community members that also regularly meet to discuss questions and concerns about the school.  SIC meets the first Thursday of the month at 3:00 and all parents are invited.  Also, frequently, rumors travel around the community, raising more questions or concerns.  Please do not hesitate to call me for clarification or feel free to attend any of our SIC meetings.

Thank you for all your support and remember that Together We Make the Difference!

  • December Posting

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 12/5/2017 8:00:00 AM

December has come so quickly and it is hard to believe that 2017 is already coming to a close.  We have had a tremendous start to the school year, and we know as we head into the second semester that we are going to finish strong.  I do want to share how proud I am of our children, parents and staff for the amazing giving spirit they demonstrated for our many fund-raisers, including United Way, Relay for Life, and the filling of one hundred and ten boxes for soldiers that are on their way overseas.  The Beta Club and School Ambassadors are also continuing to raise money for a Christmas community service project.  What an amazing community we live in!

I hope you’ve had a chance to drive by the building site for our new school!  It is so exciting to finally see the walls of the building starting to grow.  We still appear to be on track for a mid-year opening in 2018, so, a year from now, we will be moving into the new building.  We have received some ideas from parents as to how to make this a smooth transition into the new building.  Fingers crossed, we stay on schedule, and we can have an open house for both the students and parents before we leave for our winter break next December.  If you have any ideas on how to make this move easier on you or the students, please don’t hesitate to email me or your child’s teacher.  We are welcome to all suggestions.

Thank you so much for all you do for your child and for Camden Elementary – together we make the difference in lives of so many.  Have a restful and blessed holiday season and we look forward to seeing you at our holiday programs and back again in January!

  • November Post

Posted by Nancy Jeffers on 11/1/2017 8:15:00 AM

What an outstanding first nine weeks of school we’ve had!  We loved seeing well behaved children working in the classrooms, and I know parents have enjoyed seeing photos of the Positive Referral recipients!  We also received test scores from last spring and are exceptionally pleased to see that we outperformed the other schools in Kershaw County on almost every test.   Those scores were a result of parents, teachers and students working together and we will continue to need your support.  Parent conferences were a great success last month.  If you have not had your conference please be sure to send your child’s teacher a note asking to schedule one.

I know there have been a lot of questions about the Read to Succeed legislation that requires students be retained if they are not reading on grade level. We have been sharing the information that we have with third grade parents.  Unfortunately we still have a lot of questions for which we, too, have yet to receive answers.  We hope to have a session at our literacy night for K-2 parents to answer their questions, and hopefully by then, we will have received more answers from the State Department of Education.  It is important that we do not wait until third grade to make sure our children are on grade level, and understand that we have been working with our K-2 teachers for several years assisting them to better prepare their students to be reading on grade level by the end of third grade.

Thank you for your support, and we hope that you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Remember that
