  • Habit 5 Habit 5 — Seek First to Understand and Then to be Understood

Seek First to Understand and Then to be Understood means that it is better to listen first and then talk second.  Listening is a skill and we must teach children how to listen.  Have children practice listening without interrupting.  They can also practice listening with their eyes, ears, and heart.  Simply put, we have two ears and one mouth, so we can spend more time listening with the intent to understand.  Activities to do at home: Often times body language can be even more important than words. Play a game with your kids, where you both try to guess the others emotion (happy, sad, angry, bored, frustrated) without using any words, only body language.  Then discuss how some body language may make you feel.  This is a good way to spark some conversation with your children about the habits and how we should always seek first to understand and then to be understood.
