The State Department of Education issued a new Proviso on January 10, 2002 relating to technology and certification. The following points were issued:

• Teachers must demonstrate technology proficiency during their next re-certification validity period. They must renew their technology proficiency status during each five-year recertification period.
• School Districts will submit an assurance form to the Office of Technology validating the fact that the teacher is proficient in technology prior to the conclusion of his/her validity period.
• Teacher technology competency standards (which should be included in and/or tied to district technology plans) must be approved by the Office of Technology as a prerequisite to expenditure of district technology funds. Guidelines will be provided including sample standards/assessment tools, and verification of approval of technology plans and standards via the Department of Education website.
