  • Ginger the Reading Therapy Dog

Posted by Anne Lemieux at 9/15/2016

     By Donna Garber Ginger's human.

Ginger moved to Lugoff when she was eight weeks old, and spent the first year with her owners learning all the basic obedience skills to become a therapy dog. During those first months, Ginger visited residents in local nursing homes, walked the aisles of Lowes and other stores, and attended Greater Columbia Obedience classes in preparation for her job as a reading therapy dog. In August of 2015, Ginger began her weekly visits to the LEHS library to further work on her training. The high school students were a great part of this project, and stopped by to read with Ginger throughout the day on Tuesdays. Our work is not complete! Ginger is now two years old, has made some great progress, but needs continued practice with student readers. High school students can ask teachers to sign them up for a 15 minute reading session with Ginger each week. Come be a part of this literacy project, as we train Ginger to help younger students become fluent and confident readers.
